Odds and Evens

An exploration in probability using odd and even numbers.

The network below is a kind of game. At every black spot you throw two dice and add the score. If the total is odd you follow the red (or top) line and arrow, and if it is even you follow the blue (or bottom) line and arrow. If you are lucky you win, if not, you go BANG!

a network

Try the game 20 times and write down whether you win or not. How many times do you win out of the 20 tries?

Now change the rules a bit. Instead of adding the score on the two dice, multiply them together. Again go on the red or top line if you get an odd score and the blue or bottom line if it is even.

Now try the game 20 times and write down whether you win or not. Is it the same as it was before? If not, why do you think this is?

You can download the board.
